Atlantica Shipping Reenters Dry Bulk Market
Atlantica Shipping is making waves in the dry bulk sector with the recent acquisition of a kamsarmax bulker, the Atlantica Star. This move marks the company’s strategic return to this market after a brief period focusing solely on offshore operations. The Oslo-based firm is now poised to leverage its renewed presence in the dry bulk industry.
New Addition to the Fleet
The Atlantica Star, a kamsarmax bulker built in 2011, has officially joined Atlantica’s fleet. The vessel will be placed under the technical management of AM Nomikos, a Greek company specializing in bulkers. Although Atlantica has not disclosed the seller, industry insiders have identified the previous owner as Indian firm Great Eastern Shipping, which reportedly sold the vessel, known as the Jag Aarati, for between $14 million and $15 million in December.
This acquisition signifies a notable strategic pivot for Atlantica Shipping. The company had previously streamlined its operations to focus on offshore vessels after exiting the container shipping market last year. Earlier in 2023, Atlantica sold its boxship, the Atlantica Power, for approximately $45 million, transferring ownership in January with a charter agreement in place. This sale followed the acquisition of the Atlantica Power in 2024, marking a brief return to container shipping for the company. Later that year, Atlantica also acquired another container vessel, the Atlantica Pioneer, which was sold in late 2025 for about $31 million, again with a charter attached.
The addition of the Atlantica Star signifies a renewed commitment to the dry bulk market, specifically within the kamsarmax segment. This move follows the sale of Atlantica’s last three supramax vessels in the latter half of 2024, and it underscores the company’s strategy to diversify its fleet and enhance its operational capabilities in the dry bulk sector.
