Austal and Gotlandsbolaget Launch Horizon X Ferry Project
Austal Limited and Gotlandsbolaget have officially kicked off the construction of the Horizon X, a groundbreaking hydrogen-ready high-speed ferry. The ceremony, hosted by Austal Asia President Wayne Murray, featured key executives from both companies, including Austal CEO Paddy Gregg and Gotlandsbolaget CEO Björn Nilsson. This milestone not only marks the beginning of the build activity but also underscores the strengthening partnership between the two firms as they aim to advance sustainable maritime solutions.
Significance of the Horizon X Project
The commencement of the Horizon X project is a pivotal moment for both Austal and Gotlandsbolaget. During the ceremony, Austal CEO Paddy Gregg emphasized that the plate cutting milestone reflects the market’s confidence in Austal’s shipbuilding capabilities. He stated, “Today’s plate cutting for Horizon X is a proud moment for the Austal team in the Philippines and across the Austal Group. It represents the first major step in bringing this exciting new vessel to life for Gotlandsbolaget.”
The Horizon X is not just any ferry; it is a 130-meter catamaran designed to carry up to 1,500 passengers and 400 vehicles. Its innovative multi-fuel design incorporates a combined cycle propulsion system that utilizes gas and steam turbines, enhanced by waste heat recovery. This approach aims to redefine efficiency and sustainability in the ferry sector, aligning with Gotlandsbolaget’s commitment to cutting-edge maritime technology.
Gotlandsbolaget CEO Björn Nilsson expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Commencing production of Horizon X is a significant milestone for Gotlandsbolaget. We are pleased to see construction underway and to celebrate this moment alongside Austal and the skilled shipbuilders here in Balamban.” He highlighted that this vessel represents a key investment in the company’s future capabilities, combining speed, capacity, and sustainability.

Construction Timeline and Environmental Impact
The Horizon X ferry is set to be constructed using lightweight “green aluminium,” produced through energy-efficient processes aimed at reducing embodied carbon. The hull fabrication is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with an anticipated delivery date in mid-2028. Once operational, the ferry will serve the route between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland, significantly reducing crossing times and supporting Gotlandsbolaget’s long-term climate-neutral goals.
This project marks a significant achievement for Austal Philippines, which has established itself as a major commercial shipbuilding center, delivering over 20 vessels to operators worldwide since 2012. The launch of the Horizon X not only signifies a commitment to innovative maritime solutions but also highlights the growing importance of sustainability in the shipping industry.
