Austal USA Launches USNS Point Loma (EPF 15)
U.S. Navy’s 15th EPF Nears Sea Trials
The U.S. Navy’s 15th Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) has reached a significant milestone after being christened in early August. The vessel is now docked for final outfitting and system activation, marking the last steps before its sea trials, which are scheduled to take place later this year.
The launch process involved a complex operation using self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) to lift the ship nearly three feet and move it 400 feet onto a deck barge. This barge then transported the vessel to Austal USA’s West Campus repair yard, where it was placed in a floating dry dock. The EPF was submerged and floated for the first time before being returned to Austal USA’s construction facility.

According to Dave Growden, Austal USA’s Vice President of New Construction Programs, the success of the launch reflects strong teamwork and the ability to apply lessons learned from past projects, further enhancing the efficiency of their operations.
