Brave Swimmer to Tackle 70 km Lake Geneva Challenge

This September, British endurance swimmer Andrew Cornish is set to embark on a daunting solo swim across Lake Geneva, covering a staggering 70 kilometers. This ambitious effort aims to raise funds for the medical charity Mercy Ships, known for providing life-saving surgical care in sub-Saharan Africa. The swim, officially dubbed the Lake Geneva Signature Swim, will commence at the historic Chillon Castle in Veytaux and conclude at Bains des Pâquis in Geneva.

A Test of Endurance and Commitment

The Lake Geneva crossing is a monumental challenge, twice the length of the English Channel, which Cornish successfully swam last month. This swim will test his limits both physically and mentally, with obstacles such as frigid water temperatures, unpredictable alpine weather, and the daunting prospect of swimming through the night. Historically, fewer than 20 swimmers have completed this solo journey, and if successful, Cornish will join the ranks of the youngest individuals to achieve this feat.

How Mercy Ships Uses Cruise Ship Expertise To Provide Aid

“This is going to be one of the toughest things I have ever done,” Cornish stated. “But knowing it will help Mercy Ships makes every hour of training worth it.” Each contribution to Cornish’s fundraising efforts will directly support Mercy Ships’ mission to strengthen medical systems and provide safe surgical care to those in need.

Scheduled for September 8, Cornish anticipates that the swim will take approximately 25 hours. During this period, he will not be permitted to leave the water or touch the accompanying support boat. He will be equipped with only a standard swimming costume, hat, and goggles, emphasising the challenge ahead.

In related news, individuals planning to attend the Geneva Dry event on April 28 and 29 next year can participate in a 5 km or 10 km run, or even a half- or full marathon around the scenic Lake Annecy. This event will take place just two days before the dry bulk summit, providing an excellent opportunity for both fitness and community engagement.
