Berge Bulk Launches Innovative Rotor Sails on Berge Meru
Berge Bulk has successfully installed four advanced folding Rotor Sails on its Newcastlemax vessel, Berge Meru, in collaboration with Anemoi Marine Technologies Ltd. This significant project, completed at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China, marks the second installation of Rotor Sails for Berge Bulk, following a similar project on the Berge Neblina. The new technology aims to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions during maritime operations.
Successful Installation and First Voyage
The installation of the Rotor Sails, each measuring 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height, was finalized in December 2025. Shortly after, the Berge Meru embarked on its inaugural voyage to Singapore, showcasing the vessel’s enhanced capabilities. The Rotor Sails, designed to harness wind energy, serve as auxiliary propulsion systems that can significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions during transit.
This project builds on the operational insights gained from the earlier installation of Rotor Sails on the Berge Neblina in June 2024. The experience from that project has bolstered confidence in the technology, aligning with Berge Bulk’s commitment to practical and scalable decarbonization strategies. The folding design of the Rotor Sails allows them to be lowered when necessary, providing flexibility for port operations and compliance with air-draught restrictions. Importantly, the sails can remain operational in adverse weather conditions, as they cease to generate thrust when switched off, ensuring safety and efficiency.
Commitment to Sustainable Shipping
Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, expressed pride in the successful collaboration with Berge Bulk, stating, “We are proud to complete our second project with Berge Bulk, bringing large-scale folding Rotor Sails to another vessel. Berge Meru demonstrates how wind propulsion can be integrated into commercial bulk carriers in a practical and operationally flexible way.” This partnership underscores the growing trend in the shipping industry to adopt innovative technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact while maintaining operational efficiency.
As the maritime sector increasingly focuses on sustainability, the deployment of Rotor Sails represents a significant step forward in harnessing renewable energy sources for commercial shipping. The successful implementation on Berge Meru is expected to pave the way for further advancements in eco-friendly maritime technologies.
