Biggest Retail Footprint At Sea Opens On Saudi Arabian Cruise Ship
Aroya: Saudi Arabia's New Luxury Cruise Experience
Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step in the cruise industry with the launch of its first cruise ship, the Aroya. This vessel, which began its inaugural sailings this week, is set to redefine luxury cruising in the region. With a focus on high-end retail and exceptional guest experiences, Aroya aims to attract both local and international travelers.
Aroya: A New Benchmark in Cruising
The Aroya is an impressive 1,099 feet long and features 1,678 cabins, accommodating up to 3,362 passengers. While it is smaller than some of the largest cruise ships in the world, such as Royal Caribbean’s Icon and Oasis-class vessels, Aroya offers a unique experience with fewer guests. This design choice allows for more spacious accommodations, including lavish Khuzama suites and villas.
The ship’s suites, such as the ‘Family Premier’ and ‘Seaview’ suites, can reach up to 625 square feet. Each suite includes dining areas and fully furnished balconies, all serviced by dedicated butlers and concierges. For those seeking even more luxury, the Royal Villa and Presidential Villa offer jacuzzis and expansive living spaces, with the largest villa spanning an impressive 4,250 square feet.
Aroya’s inaugural voyages will take place over three nights, departing from Jeddah’s cruise terminal. This new cruise line, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, aims to position the country as a premier cruise destination. The ambitious goal is to welcome 1.3 million cruise passengers by 2035, aligning with the nation’s Vision 2030 initiative to diversify its economy.
Retail Experience Like No Other
Aroya sets a new standard for retail on cruise ships, boasting over 17,250 square feet of shopping space. This retail area is the largest of its kind in the global cruise sector, according to retail concessionaire Gebr. Heinemann. The shopping experience on board is designed to cater to the affluent tastes of Saudi and Gulf Cooperation Council nationals.

Jörg Rudolph, President of Aroya Cruises, emphasized the extraordinary shopping experience guests can expect. The ship features eight boutiques spread across three decks, showcasing more than 250 international and Arabian brands. A dedicated team of 30 Heinemann employees will provide exceptional customer service.
On Deck 6, passengers can explore the Aroya Souk, which offers regional gifts, delicacies, and sweets, including dates from renowned Arab brands like Nua and Bateel. Deck 7 features a variety of shops, including boutiques for fragrances, cosmetics, watches, jewelry, and children’s clothing. For a more exclusive experience, Deck 16 houses the Khuzama Boutique, a VIP concierge-led luxury store that offers personal shopping by appointment.
Embracing Arabian Culture and Innovation
The retail spaces aboard Aroya are designed to reflect Arabian culture and aesthetics. The Aroya Souk and beauty boutique incorporate dune and sand motifs, while palm trees and architectural arches pay homage to the region’s landscapes. Additionally, several stores provide private shopping areas for women, ensuring a comfortable and discreet experience.
A groundbreaking feature of Aroya is its web store, claimed to be the first of its kind on a cruise ship. Passengers can use the ship’s dedicated app to browse products, reserve items, or pre-order them before their voyage. This innovative approach allows guests to shop conveniently, even outside of store hours, with the requirement to collect their purchases in-store.
Cruise Saudi, launched during the pandemic in 2021, is committed to enhancing the country’s tourism sector. CEO Lars Clasen stated that the mission is to establish Saudi Arabia as a world-class cruise destination. With the launch of Aroya, the nation is poised to attract a new wave of travelers eager to explore its rich culture and stunning landscapes from the comfort of a luxury cruise.
