Birdon America Advances U.S. Coast Guard Vessel Construction
Birdon America has officially commenced construction on the third U.S. Coast Guard waterways commerce cutter (WCC) vessel, designated as Inland Construction Tender WLIC 1602. This significant development follows the initiation of work on WLIC 1601 in June and the first river buoy tender, WLR 1801, which began in September. The early start on WLIC 1602 underscores Birdon’s commitment to the project and reflects the U.S. Coast Guard’s confidence in the company.
Workforce Expansion and Contract Details
Since acquiring the Bayou La Batre facility in Spring 2024, Birdon has significantly expanded its workforce, adding nearly 100 full-time employees. The company has also established strong retention rates and engaged numerous subcontractors and suppliers at the site. This workforce growth is essential to support the ongoing WCC program, ensuring that Birdon can meet its production goals effectively.
Birdon Set to Deliver First Tranche of Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs) to the Netherlands Army
In 2022, Birdon was awarded a substantial contract worth $1.187 billion to design and construct a total of 27 WCC vessels for the U.S. Coast Guard. This contract includes 16 river buoy tenders (WLRs) and 11 inland construction tenders (WLICs). The waterways commerce cutters play a vital role in maintaining the Marine Transportation System, which is crucial for U.S. supply chains, disaster response efforts, and environmental protection initiatives. The successful delivery of these vessels will enhance the operational capabilities of the U.S. Coast Guard, ensuring they can effectively fulfill their mission.
