Birdon America Launches Construction of Third U.S. Coast Guard Waterways Commerce Cutter
Birdon America has officially commenced construction on the third U.S. Coast Guard waterways commerce cutter (WCC), designated as the Inland Construction Tender WLIC 1602. This significant development follows the initiation of work on WLIC 1601 in June and the first river buoy tender, WLR 1801, in September. The early start on WLIC 1602 underscores Birdon’s commitment to the project and reflects the U.S. Coast Guard’s confidence in the company, bolstered by a recent $110 million contract awarded for production and long lead-time materials on September 30, 2025.
Hoby Swiney, Vice President and General Manager of Birdon’s Alabama shipyard, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support the U.S. Coast Guard’s mission. He emphasized the importance of delivering vessels that adhere to the highest standards of quality, performance, and reliability. Swiney credited the achievement to the Coast Guard’s ongoing support and the dedication of Birdon’s team, which has been instrumental in fostering a positive work environment.
