Boluda Towage welcomes Uruguay’s first IMO Tier III tugboat
Boluda Towage Introduces Uruguay's First Eco-Friendly Azimuth Stern Drive Tug
A newly built azimuth stern drive tug equipped with pollution-reduction technology has begun operations at Uruguay’s main port, setting a milestone for environmental sustainability in the region.
Boluda Towage has unveiled the first tugboat in Uruguay with onboard systems designed to minimize pollutants that affect the health of those living and working near the country’s primary port.
The azimuth stern drive tug VB Tero, which arrived in the port of Montevideo in July, was warmly welcomed by other Boluda-operated tugboats. This vessel stands out as the first tug in Uruguay to meet IMO Tier III standards, significantly reducing emissions of NOx, SOx, and particulate matter.
This 387-gt tug features two Caterpillar-manufactured Cat 3516C main diesel four-stroke engines, each operating at 1,800 rpm and connected to a selective catalytic reduction unit to minimize NOx emissions.
Designed and built by Damen Shipyards, VB Tero boasts a bollard pull of 82 tonnes, driven by two azimuth thrusters, and is equipped with a ship-handling winch on the foredeck. The tug sails under the flag of St Vincent & Grenadines.
“VB Tero is outfitted with the most recent technology to regulate and minimise emissions, guaranteeing compliance with IMO Tier III standards, just like all the recently constructed tugboats.”Boluda Towage stated in its recent LinkedIn post. “This aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability and marks another step towards reducing the impact of our operations.”
Situated on the Rio de la Plata river, east of Uruguay’s capital, the port of Montevideo is a major hub in South America, featuring a significant container ship terminal as well as the country’s primary oil import terminal and refining complex.
