The accident took place at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard, where a massive 150,000-ton oil platform is being built. According to the Changwon Coast Guard, the inspector was performing load tests and structural checks near the stern of the vessel when a structural component gave way, causing him to fall into the water. Two other workers who were with him managed to cling to the structure and were rescued without sustaining life-threatening injuries.

The inspector was working for the Brazilian shipowner set to take delivery of the oil platform, highlighting the high stakes involved in such construction projects.
The Changwon Coast Guard has initiated an investigation into the accident, questioning witnesses and examining the conditions that led to this unfortunate event.
