BSC’s new bulk carrier makes maiden voyage to Chattogram from China
Bangladesh Shipping Corporation Launches New Vessel
The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) has embarked on a significant milestone with its newly acquired bulk carrier, MV Banglar Progoti, currently on its inaugural commercial journey to Chattogram. The vessel set sail from the Chinese port of Dangdong on November 4, carrying 60,500 tonnes of slag, a crucial raw material for cement production, and is expected to reach Kutubdia by November 20. This venture marks the first time BSC has utilized its own funds to purchase vessels following an international tender earlier this year.
Details of the Maiden Voyage
BSC officially took ownership of MV Banglar Progoti from US-based Hellenic Dry Bulk Ventures LLC on October 21. The ship was received at Nanyang Shipyard in China just two days later. On October 26, the 199-meter-long carrier, which boasts a capacity of 63,500 deadweight tonnes (DWT), was chartered to Hong Kong-based LTE Shipping at a daily rate of $20,000. BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek confirmed that the vessel has been chartered for an initial three-month period, allowing the charterer full control over routing and cargo handling.
Interestingly, the cargo loaded in China is destined for Bangladeshi importers, making this voyage particularly significant for the local cement industry. The slag is being transported for four major cement producers: Unique Cement Industries Ltd, Heidelberg Cement, Confidence Cement, and Crown Cement. Each of the two vessels purchased by BSC, including MV Banglar Progoti, cost $38.349 million, which is approximately 4.60 percent below the estimated budget. Meanwhile, the construction of the second vessel, MV Banglar Nobojatra, is nearing completion, with BSC officials optimistic about its delivery by December.
