Bulk Carrier Spar Indus Runs Aground Off Chile, No Pollution or Injuries Reported
On the morning of November 13, 2024, the bulk carrier Spar Indus ran aground in the Gulf of Arauco, about 3.5 nautical miles from Punta Cochinos, Santa Maria Island, Chile. The 200-meter-long vessel, which weighs 63,800 deadweight tons (dwt), was traveling from Santos, Brazil, to Cabo Froward in Coronel when it became stranded.
As soon as the accident occurred, local authorities acted quickly. A response team was sent to the location to assess the situation and investigate the cause of the grounding. Divers were deployed to check the condition of the ship. They reported that the Spar Indus was stable and there was no sign of oil spill or pollution. Thankfully, all 21 crew members on board were unharmed.

Tugboats were brought in to assist the Spar Indus in getting free from the shallow waters. After hours of efforts, the ship was successfully refloated on November 14, 2024. The bulk carrier then sailed around the northern end of Santa Maria Island and made its way to the Bay of Coronel, where it safely anchored.
