Bureau Veritas to provide Technology Qualification support on a Gen. IV floating nuclear project consortium
In a strategic move towards decarbonizing the French maritime sector, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has partnered with newcleo and ABMI Groupe to collaborate on the conceptual design of a pioneering floating nuclear power solution. This innovative project, named “n-Floating”, has secured nearly €1 million in funding under the French call-for-projects “Supporting the decarbonization of the French maritime sector”, managed by BPIFrance.
Consortium Formation and Project Scope
BV will play a crucial role in this initiative by providing technology qualification services for the n-Floating project. Working alongside newcleo, an advanced nuclear technology company, and ABMI Groupe, a French engineering firm specializing in both maritime and nuclear sectors, BV aims to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a floating nuclear power solution. The project will focus on integrating newcleo’s Gen. IV lead-cooled fast reactors (LFR-AS-200) within a non-self-propelled floating unit, with each reactor capable of delivering 200 MWe.
Sustainable Energy Generation at Sea
The consortium’s primary objective is to develop the conceptual design of a nuclear barge that incorporates multiple 200 MWe reactors. By harnessing expertise from the maritime and offshore industries and drawing on proven approaches from the Oil & Gas sector, the project aims to create a standardized, deployable solution for low-carbon energy generation at sea and in coastal locations. This innovative approach seeks to revolutionize energy production, storage, liquefaction, and regasification through the fusion of mature maritime capabilities with cutting-edge nuclear technology.
Focus on Safety and Regulatory Compliance
As the project progresses, Bureau Veritas will leverage its expertise in classification, risk assessment, and technology qualification to ensure the safety, regulatory compliance, and technical viability of floating nuclear applications. The initial phase will involve conducting detailed conceptual studies to evaluate the potential of the nuclear barge in delivering reliable, zero-emission, and cost-effective energy solutions for various applications, including supplying isolated regions, ports, industrial hubs, coastal areas, desalination plants, and low-carbon fuel production facilities.
By combining the strengths of BV, newcleo, and ABMI Groupe, the n-Floating project represents a significant step towards achieving sustainable energy solutions in the maritime sector. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental stewardship in the development of cutting-edge technologies for a greener future.
