Busan Port Launches E-Green Ferry for Cleaner Operations
Busan Port Authority (BPA) has officially launched the E-Green, a battery-electric port guide vessel, marking a pivotal step in the port’s commitment to reducing emissions. The launch ceremony, held in the North Port area, was attended by various stakeholders, including National Assembly members and civil society representatives. BPA President Sang-geun Song emphasized the ferry’s role in promoting eco-friendly maritime solutions, inviting citizens to experience the port’s transformation towards sustainability.
Significance of the E-Green Ferry
The introduction of the E-Green ferry represents a significant milestone in Busan Port’s efforts to align with global decarbonization initiatives in the shipping industry. According to Hyunju Kang, Asia Climate Campaign Director at Pacific Environment, the E-Green serves as a prime example of how port authorities can lead the way in reducing emissions through operational choices. This initiative underscores the potential for meaningful environmental impact driven by local decisions rather than national mandates.
ABS Joins Korean Industry Leaders on 3D Printing Project for Ship Operations
Since 2005, BPA has operated port guide vessels as part of its public engagement strategy, welcoming over 200,000 visitors to learn about port operations. The E-Green replaces the aging Saenuri vessel, which had been in service for 28 years. The decision to adopt a battery-electric vessel instead of a conventional fossil-fuel-powered replacement reflects BPA’s commitment to sustainability. Constructed by a local shipbuilder, the E-Green underwent extensive sea trials to ensure its operational safety before entering service.
Powered entirely by batteries, the E-Green produces minimal noise, vibration, and exhaust emissions, providing a quieter and cleaner experience for passengers. This innovation not only enhances the visitor experience but also showcases how port authorities can implement zero-emission solutions independently. As the world’s seventh-largest container port and a major transshipment hub, Busan Port’s electrification of its service vessels highlights its proactive approach to climate action in the maritime sector.
