BV, Hanwha Ocean, and Naftomar collaborate to develop vessels with an ammonia fuel prepared design

Bureau Veritas (BV), a world leader in testing, inspection and certification, has partnered with Hanwha Ocean, a leading global shipbuilding company, and Naftomar, a prominent maritime logistics provider, to develop vessels with an ammonia fuel prepared design.

The joint development project (JDP) agreement was signed by Jong Seo Kim, President of Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd, Talal Zein, Head of Trading of Naftomar Shipping and Trading Co., Ltd., and Matthieu de Tugny, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, at a ceremony on June 4 at Posidonia 2024 in Athens, Greece. The collaboration aims to advance decarbonization of shipping through innovative development of a vessel design optimized for ammonia fuel utilization.

The project will work to help ensure a modern vessel design, to be engaged in the trade of green ammonia, can be safely built to operate with both LPG and ammonia as fuel. BV will provide its technical expertise for the design review of VLAC and VLCC utilizing ammonia fuel; Hanwha Ocean will contribute its knowledge and experience in shipbuilding, and Naftomar will leverage its deep understanding of the ammonia supply chain and logistics. The current BV Rules NR 671 for ammonia as fuel will serve as the basis for helping ensure safety. The focus of the project will be on global safety aspects but specifically including the ammonia fuel supply system, leak detection, ammonia fuel containment and ammonia bunkering.
