Canadian Coast Guard Calls Off MOB Search for One of Its Own

Canadian Coast Guard Ends Search for Missing Crew Member from Icebreaker

The Canadian Coast Guard has sadly called off a search for one of its crew members who went missing from an icebreaker ship. The Coast Guard shared a short message online, saying that their thoughts are with the missing person’s family and their employees.

The missing crew member was last seen aboard the CCGS Vincent Massey, one of the newest icebreakers in the Coast Guard fleet. When the crew discovered someone was missing, the ship had been returning to its base in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

According to reports, the vessel arrived in St. John’s around 9:45 a.m. on Monday, September 16, and that’s when they noticed the crew member was no longer on board. A large search was immediately launched, involving aircraft, boats, and help from other nearby vessels.

The crew member had been last seen the evening before, on Sunday, while the Vincent Massey was sailing off the east coast of Newfoundland, close to Pouch Cove, a small town at the northernmost tip of the island.

In a heartfelt online post, the Canadian Coast Guard expressed their deep sadness, saying, “We are devastated to confirm that one of our own has been lost at sea.” The Coast Guard noted that their teams worked hard on a rescue operation, both in the air and on the water, but unfortunately, the search ended without success.

The Vincent Massey is a medium-sized icebreaker that was originally built in Norway in 2000. It weighs 3,300 tons and is 275 feet long. The ship can hold a crew of 19 people. This icebreaker became part of the Canadian Coast Guard in September 2023, after being overhauled by Davie Shipbuilding as part of a government program that started in 2018 to update older ships.

For now, no more details about how the crew member went missing have been shared. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), also known as the Mounties, have taken over the investigation to learn more about what happened.
