Cargo Ship Catches Fire In The Marmara Sea While En Route To Bulgaria, 2 Dead
A serious fire broke out in the engine room of a Turkish cargo ship named FG Sevil on October 31, causing the tragic loss of two crew members’ lives. The accident happened as the ship traveled across the Marmara Sea, heading from Yalova, Turkey, to Bulgaria.
The FG Sevil is a 342-foot (104-meter) cargo ship that was built in 2009. Onboard were 17 crew members and eight workers from a Turkish shipyard. The fire started near Sedef Island, which is just east of Istanbul, and quickly put everyone on the ship in danger.
When the fire was reported, emergency services acted fast. They sent two tugboats, KURTARMA-7 and ŞARK, along with an evacuation boat, to help put out the fire and rescue the people onboard.
Rescue Efforts and Tragic Discovery
Rescue teams managed to control and stop the fire, which was mainly in the ship’s engine room. Unfortunately, when they checked the area, they found two Turkish crew members unconscious. Despite their efforts, the two crew members were later confirmed dead.
Following this tragic discovery, the tugboat ŞARK safely towed the FG Sevil to a secure location in Istanbul’s Kartal area. This allowed officials to conduct further investigations.
