Cargo Ship Mishap: Dozens of Containers Spill into Long Beach

In a startling incident at the Port of Long Beach, a cargo ship named Mississippi lost nearly 70 shipping containers overboard on Tuesday morning. The containers, which fell into the water around 9 a.m., were stacked at the dock but toppled without any reported injuries. The contents of the containers remain unclear, although floating debris, including shoes and boxes, was observed alongside them.

Response and Investigation Underway

The U.S. Coast Guard swiftly responded to the scene near Pier G and established a 500-yard safety zone around the ship. Crews are working diligently to secure the containers and prevent them from drifting further into the ocean. Port of Long Beach spokesperson Art Marroquin confirmed that cargo operations at the pier were temporarily halted as authorities investigate the cause of the incident.

The Mississippi, which arrived in Long Beach from China earlier that same day, was involved in loading and unloading operations when the mishap occurred. The Coast Guard has deployed high-pressure water to keep the containers in place and prevent any potential environmental hazards. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, which suggests that safety protocols may have been effective in minimizing harm to dock workers and nearby vessels.

As the U.S. gateway for Pacific trade, the Port of Long Beach plays a crucial role in international shipping, having handled more than 9.6 million container units in 2024, marking its busiest year to date. Authorities are now focused on determining the factors that led to the containers falling overboard, aiming to enhance safety measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.
