CCS Showcases New Green Ship Designs at SMM 2024

The Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology International Trade Fair (SMM) 2024 kicked off on September 3, 2024, in Hamburg, attracting global leaders in shipbuilding and maritime technology. China Classification Society (CCS) was a prominent exhibitor, showcasing advancements in green technologies, smart ships, and digital innovations. With over 2,300 exhibitors from 100 countries, the event drew significant attention, including participation from about 200 Chinese exhibitors. CCS Vice President Zhao Yan led the CCS delegation, highlighting the society’s contributions to the industry’s future.

At the exhibition, CCS released several ship designs that incorporate low-carbon and sustainable technologies, including methanol, ammonia, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel ships. These innovative designs emphasize safety, structural optimization, and compliance with global maritime regulations. CCS has played a key role in developing technical solutions for these ships, offering comprehensive support in meeting technical standards. The vessels showcased include ammonia bunkering ships and ammonia-fueled container ships, all featuring advanced environmental protection and efficient cargo-handling capabilities.

One of the standout designs was the 20,000m³ ammonia bunkering vessel, which features ammonia leak detection, NOx reduction systems, and innovative cargo tank designs to minimize fuel loss. Additionally, the 16,000 TEU ammonia container ship, capable of operating on ammonia and diesel, aims to reduce sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions and achieve zero carbon emissions. Other notable designs included a 16,500 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ship, equipped with advanced energy-saving systems, and an 18,000 m³ ammonia bunkering vessel with cutting-edge safety systems.

Zero Emission Shipping Fund proposal submitted to UN to deliver on shipping’s net zero targets

CCS’s collaboration with key industry players, including the Marine Design & Research Institute of China and China Ship Design & Research Center, demonstrates its commitment to leading the transition to green and efficient ship technologies. The release of these new ship types during SMM 2024 underscores CCS’s role in shaping the future of sustainable maritime transport.
