Chemship Expands Wind Propulsion Fleet

Chemical tanker operator Chemship is set to enhance its sustainability efforts by installing VentoFoils on two additional vessels, the Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter, in the latter half of 2026. This move follows the successful implementation of similar technology on the Chemical Challenger, marking a significant step towards reducing fuel consumption and emissions within the maritime industry.

Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

Chemship’s decision to equip the Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter with four 16-meter ATEX-proof VentoFoils each underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability. The installation of these wind-assisted propulsion systems is expected to further decrease fuel usage and emissions across its fleet. The Chemical Challenger, which was retrofitted with the same technology in early 2024, has already demonstrated a reduction in fuel consumption by up to 15%, showcasing the effectiveness of wind solutions in real operational scenarios.

Niels Grotz, CEO of Chemship, emphasized the company’s commitment to achieving net-zero shipping. He stated, “We are pushing ahead on sustainability in every area of our business. The results of the VentoFoils on Chemical Challenger speak for themselves.” This proactive approach not only highlights Chemship’s leadership in the chemical tanker sector but also sets a precedent for other operators to follow.

Chiel de Leeuw, Chief Commercial Officer at Econowind, expressed pride in Chemship’s pioneering efforts. He remarked, “Chemship has shown leadership by being the first chemical tanker operator to embrace wind-assisted ship propulsion.” The repeat order for VentoFoils serves as a strong endorsement of Econowind’s technology and encourages other companies to explore similar sustainable solutions.

Recognition and Future Plans

In addition to its advancements in wind propulsion, Chemship has recently achieved a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, placing it among the top 1% of companies assessed globally for environmental, social, and governance criteria. This recognition reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and its efforts to implement various efficiency measures across its fleet, including advanced hull coatings and premium lubricants.

The upcoming installations on the Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter are part of Chemship’s broader sustainability roadmap, which aims to manage emissions costs in light of evolving regulatory frameworks, such as the FuelEU Maritime Regulation. Grotz noted, “At the moment we have the youngest and most economical fleet on our trade lanes. We are continuously looking for new technologies to further optimize fuel use, including as part of our fleet renewal program.”

As Chemship continues to innovate and invest in sustainable technologies, it sets a vital example for the maritime industry, demonstrating that environmental responsibility and operational efficiency can go hand in hand.
