China’s New Amphibious Assault Vessel to Feature Drones
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy is advancing its naval capabilities with the introduction of its largest amphibious assault vessel, the Type 076, which will be equipped to operate with drones. Senior officer Chi Jianjun confirmed this development during a recent interview with state news channel CCTV. The PLA Navy is shifting its focus to unmanned combat systems, recognizing their growing importance in modern warfare.
Type 076: A New Era in Naval Warfare
The Type 076, also known as the Shandong, represents a significant leap in China’s amphibious assault capabilities. This vessel is unique as it is designed with a catapult system, allowing for enhanced aircraft launch capabilities. The Shandong measures approximately 850 feet long and 170 feet wide, making it larger than the U.S. Navy’s America-class amphibious assault ships. Its design includes dual elevators on both sides, facilitating a higher volume of aircraft operations compared to its predecessor, the Type 075.
Launched on December 27, the Shandong is expected to enter service soon. It features a well deck at the stern for the launch and recovery of landing craft, further enhancing its operational versatility. The vessel’s flight deck was initially covered, leading to speculation about the presence of an electromagnetic catapult, which would allow for the launch of various aircraft, including drones.
Western analysts have identified the Shandong as a potential aerial combat drone carrier due to its size and capabilities. Satellite images have revealed what appear to be full-scale mockups of China’s GJ-11 unmanned combat aircraft near the CSSC Hudong Zhonghua shipyard. These mockups are typically used for testing and crew training, indicating that the PLA is preparing for advanced drone operations aboard the Shandong.
Chinese sources suggest that the Shandong could be operational by the end of 2025, marking a new chapter in naval warfare for China. With the integration of drone technology, the PLA Navy aims to enhance its combat effectiveness and maintain a competitive edge in the region.
