EXMAR Begins Construction of New Gas Carrier

Belgium-based shipping company EXMAR has officially commenced the construction of its latest midsize gas carrier, featuring advanced LPG dual-fuel engines. The steel-cutting ceremony occurred on December 30, 2024, at the CIMC Sinopacific shipyard in China. This new vessel is part of EXMAR’s broader strategy to enhance its fleet and adapt to changing market demands. The delivery of this new gas carrier is expected in the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant milestone for the company.

Expansion of EXMAR’s Fleet

EXMAR’s new midsize gas carrier is one of four vessels recently acquired from Norway’s shipping company Avance Gas. The total investment for these four ships amounts to $282.4 million. Each vessel has a capacity of 41,000 cubic meters, which will significantly expand EXMAR’s operational capabilities. This strategic acquisition aims to diversify the fleet’s range of sizes and capabilities, allowing EXMAR to attract new business opportunities in the competitive shipping market.

The decision to invest in these midsize gas carriers reflects EXMAR’s commitment to maintaining a versatile and adaptable fleet. Innovative Dual-Fuel Technology

In addition to the new midsize gas carrier, EXMAR has announced the establishment of EXMAR LPG France. This new entity will oversee the operation of six dual-fuel LPG/ammonia midsize gas carriers currently under construction at HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea. These vessels are set to be the first oceangoing ships powered by dual-fuel engines capable of operating with ammonia, showcasing EXMAR’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The first of these 46,000 cubic meter carriers had its keel laid in July 2024, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The initial two vessels in this series will utilize LPG dual-fuel engines, while the remaining four will be designed to run on ammonia. This transition to ammonia as a fuel source highlights the industry’s shift towards cleaner energy solutions and aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
