ClassNK and partners sign MOU for joint development of new generation Eco LPG
In a significant development for the maritime industry, K Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Sejin Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., and ClassNK have joined forces to work on a new generation Eco LPG carrier that complies with the upcoming amendment to the IGC Code. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony took place at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Adherence to IGC Code Amendment
The International Code for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk, known as the IGC Code, is set to undergo an amendment at MSC 112 in December of this year. The amendment is expected to come into effect on July 1, 2028. To prepare for this regulatory change, the three companies have committed to developing a 9,000 m³ class LPG carrier that meets the requirements of the amended code.
Focus on Energy Efficiency
One of the key features of the new LPG carrier will be its incorporation of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) designed to enhance operational efficiency. By integrating a Rudder Bulb and Energy Saving Fin, both of which contribute to improved propulsive efficiency, the vessel is anticipated to achieve better fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Through this collaborative effort outlined in the MOU, K Shipbuilding, Sejin Heavy Industries, and ClassNK aim to facilitate a smooth transition to the amended IGC Code and promote the safe transport of liquefied gases by sea.
ClassNK Explores Autonomous Navigation
In a separate agreement signed at Gastech, ClassNK partnered with HD Hyundai Samho and Avikus for a Joint Development Project (JDP) focused on incorporating Avikus’ autonomous navigation solution ‘HINAS Control’ into a new ship design. The objective is to evaluate the feasibility of obtaining a ClassNK notation related to autonomous navigation.
