ClassNK grants its first software security certifications for Solverminds’ ship management solutions

ClassNK Awards First Software Security Certifications

Tokyo – ClassNK has awarded its first software security certifications to the ship management solution “MACK,” developed by SVM Solutions and Technologies Pte. Ltd. (Solverminds).

ClassNK’s “Cyber Security Approach”*1 outlines its strategy to ensure onboard cyber security for ships. To support the “Development of shipboard products with reduced cyber risks” mentioned in this approach, ClassNK has issued the “Guidelines for Software Security,”*2 created in collaboration with its partner TÜV Rheinland. These guidelines recommend security measures throughout the development, integration, and operation stages of shipboard software, and ClassNK conducts third-party certification based on these guidelines.

“MACK” is a comprehensive digital ship management solution that supports a data-driven decision-making system. ClassNK has verified the development process and functionality of the “MACK Web Application,” “MACK Audit Mobile Application,” and “MACK Notification Mobile Application” based on the guidelines. After confirming compliance with the prescribed requirements, ClassNK issued certificates for these three applications.

Ritesh Sood, Managing Director & Co-Founder of Solverminds, stated, “Cyber threats and vulnerabilities need to be tackled with a high degree of diligence by all stakeholders in the maritime industry. In today’s digital landscape, ship management companies increasingly expect software providers to prioritize cyber risk management to support safe and secure ship management. MACK’s assessment and certification by ClassNK for software security onboard ships demonstrate Solverminds’ commitment to meeting these expectations, enhancing our collective security posture, and providing a secure product for ship management companies.”

Yasushi Seto, Regional Manager of Southeast Asia and Oceania at ClassNK, said, “Cyber security is currently drawing significant attention in the industry, and we are honored to be involved in such cutting-edge efforts as a certification body. By reducing software security risk, we believe we can mitigate security risks for ship management companies and the ships under their management. This marks our very first software security certification and is a significant milestone for us. ClassNK will continue to provide cyber security services to further ensure the safety of ships.”

Ramesh Nadarajah, Managing Director of TÜV Rheinland Singapore & Vice President Industrial Service Asia Pacific, added, “The maritime industry is undergoing a paradigm shift, with ships becoming more connected through various applications. In this context, TÜV Rheinland, in collaboration with ClassNK, developed ‘The Guidelines for Software Security’ and contributed to the assessment of this project from an expert’s perspective. We thank ClassNK and Solverminds for involving us in this prestigious project, marking a significant milestone for our services. TÜV Rheinland will continue to offer cybersecurity services to further ensure maritime security.”
