Gardiner and her granddaughter observed the ship’s sudden turn, which appeared to be heading directly for the shore. As they watched, thick black smoke billowed from the vessel, suggesting that the crew was attempting to slow down the ship’s momentum.

Algoma Central Corporation, the owner of the Algoma Guardian, issued a brief statement regarding the incident. The company confirmed that they were aware of the situation and had notified all relevant authorities. Importantly, they reported that there were no injuries, contact with the shoreline, property damage, or environmental impact. The vessel continued its planned voyage after the incident, although it was temporarily halted due to traffic in the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The Canadian Coast Guard was present in the area at the time, conducting buoy work. Coast Guard officials noted that while they witnessed the incident, they did not provide assistance, as they were not in a position to intervene.
