Close Call for Algoma Guardian Near Brockville Waterfront

On December 31, 2025, the bulk carrier Algoma Guardian narrowly avoided a collision with the Brockville shoreline in Ontario. Witnesses reported that the vessel came alarmingly close to the city’s coastline, approximately 30 meters from Cunningham Park on Thomas Street. The incident raised concerns among local residents who observed the ship’s unexpected maneuver.

Tina Gardiner, a resident of the Tall Ships condominiums, described the scene from her 20th-floor apartment. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing—it felt surreal, like an AI video,” she stated. Gardiner was preparing breakfast for her granddaughter when she noticed the Algoma Guardian making a sudden turn toward the shore. Initially moving down the river as expected, the ship abruptly shifted direction, heading straight for land.

Witness Accounts and Company Response

Gardiner recounted seeing thick black smoke billowing from the vessel, likely as the crew attempted to slow its approach. “I was concerned about whether they had it under control,” she said, reflecting on the potential danger to nearby neighborhoods. The incident prompted her to wonder how residents near Jessie Street were reacting to the unfolding situation.

In response to the close call, Algoma Central Corporation, the owner of the Algoma Guardian, issued a brief statement. The company confirmed awareness of the incident and noted that all relevant authorities had been informed. Importantly, they reported no injuries, property damage, or environmental impact resulting from the event. The vessel continued its planned voyage after the incident, although it was temporarily halted due to traffic in the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Coast Guard Presence and Aftermath

At the time of the incident, a Canadian Coast Guard vessel was present in the area conducting buoy work. Coast Guard officials acknowledged witnessing the event but clarified that they did not provide assistance, as they were not engaged in emergency operations. Fortunately, the Algoma Guardian managed to avoid contact with the shoreline and the sandbar in front of the park, safely returning to the river.

Algoma Central Corporation Celebrates 100th Vessel Milestone

As of late Wednesday, the Algoma Guardian was anchored in the Maitland area of the St. Lawrence River, awaiting the resumption of traffic. The vessel’s final destination is Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with maritime navigation, particularly in busy waterways.
