CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO: A Milestone in Methanol Dual-Fuel Technology
CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO, the inaugural vessel in a series of six 15,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships, has been successfully delivered. Built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) Tianjin and classed by Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), this vessel represents a significant advancement in sustainable shipping technology. The delivery marks a pivotal moment for the CMA CGM Group as it continues to enhance its green fleet.
Measuring 366 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 30.2 meters in depth, the CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO boasts a capacity of 16,204 TEU. As a New Panamax-class vessel, it features optimized hull lines, high-efficiency propellers, and pre-swirl energy-saving devices. These innovations contribute to an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) that is over 60% below the baseline, underscoring the vessel’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This project also signifies the first large-scale collaboration between BV and DSIC Tianjin in the development of green container ships.
Collaboration and Innovation in Methanol Technology
To facilitate the pioneering application of methanol dual-fuel technology at DSIC Tianjin, BV assembled a specialized team of experts. This cross-disciplinary group provided essential data analysis for shaft alignment calculations and offered on-site guidance for the commissioning of the fuel system. Additionally, they conducted training sessions focused on the methanol fuel system, ensuring that the shipyard was well-prepared for this innovative technology.
During the vessel’s sea trials, BV surveyors played a crucial role in conducting dual-fuel propulsion tests. Their involvement was instrumental in achieving key milestones, including the commissioning of the main engine in methanol mode, emission monitoring, fuel switching, and validation of the unmanned engine room. The successful endurance test of the main engine in methanol mode was a significant achievement, laying a strong foundation for the timely delivery of the CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO.
This delivery is part of a broader initiative by BV to participate in the construction of methanol-powered vessels for China State Shipbuilding Corporation. BV and DSIC have a long-standing partnership that encompasses various ship types, including FPSOs, oil tankers, bulk carriers, and container vessels. Their collaboration dates back to 2012, when they jointly delivered multiple 9,200 TEU container ships for CMA CGM, setting the stage for future large container ship projects.
Advancing Green Propulsion Technologies
In recent years, the partnership between BV and DSIC has deepened, focusing on the development of green ship designs. Their joint efforts have led to innovations in LNG dual-fuel VLCCs, ammonia bunkering vessels, and wind-assisted LNG carriers, all of which have received BV’s Approval in Principle (AIP). Currently, both organizations are engaged in multiple projects at their Dalian and Tianjin facilities, working collaboratively to advance the application of green propulsion technologies in large vessels.
The successful delivery of the CMA CGM MONTE CRISTO not only highlights the capabilities of BV and DSIC but also represents a significant step forward in the maritime industry’s transition towards more sustainable practices. As the shipping sector continues to evolve, the integration of methanol dual-fuel technology is expected to play a crucial role in reducing emissions and promoting environmental stewardship.
