Container Ship Struck by Missile

On May 5, 2026, a serious incident occurred involving the container ship ‘CMA CGM San Antonio’. The vessel was hit by a land-attack cruise missile while navigating the Strait of Hormuz at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time. The ship was en route from Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates to Mundra, India, and was reportedly making a US-backed crossing of the strategic waterway when the attack took place. Several crew members, all of whom are Filipino nationals, sustained injuries due to the missile strike.

Following the attack, the ‘CMA CGM San Antonio’ went dark for security reasons, leading to the suspension of its AIS (Automatic Identification System) transmissions. The last known position of the ship was near Dubai. As of midday on May 6, the environmental impact of the strike remains unclear, prompting authorities to advise other vessels in the vicinity to proceed with caution. The ship’s tracking system was either disabled or completely turned off after the incident.

Suspension of Maritime Operations Following Missile Strike

The missile strike on the ‘CMA CGM San Antonio’ has led to the suspension of the Trump administration’s Project Freedom operation. This initiative aimed to guide stranded vessels safely out of the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. The operation had only been underway for two days before it was halted. The escalation of attacks on commercial shipping by Iranian forces has raised significant concerns in the maritime community.

Iran has not only intensified its military actions in the region but has also announced the establishment of a formal toll collection authority for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. This development adds another layer of complexity for shipping companies operating in these waters. The situation remains fluid as authorities and maritime organizations closely monitor the implications of these attacks on international shipping and trade routes.
