Coal Carrier Stranded Off Queensland Coast for 12 Days

A coal carrier named Swift Hangzhou has been stranded off the Queensland coast for 12 days following engine troubles in the Coral Sea. The Liberian-flagged bulk carrier departed from Gladstone Port on January 31, carrying approximately 79,000 tonnes of coal and a crew of 21 members. However, less than 24 hours into its journey, the vessel encountered difficulties near Cato Reef, prompting a swift response from maritime authorities.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) confirmed that it activated an Incident Management Team on February 2 to coordinate the response efforts. AMSA is collaborating closely with Maritime Safety Queensland, the ship’s captain, and its operator to ensure the safety of the crew and the protection of the marine environment.

Response Efforts and Safety Measures

In response to the situation, AMSA has deployed four emergency towing vessels and a Maritime Casualty Officer to the site. These resources are in place to monitor the Swift Hangzhou and ensure it remains clear of navigation hazards. Aerial surveillance has also been conducted, revealing the vessel under close observation.

According to an AMSA statement, the Maritime Casualty Officer will provide essential on-the-ground intelligence to assist the captain and AMSA in determining the best course of action. The authority has assessed the vessel as safe in its current position, although it continues to monitor potential risks related to movement towards nearby reef systems and changing weather conditions.

AMSA has reassured the public that the crew aboard the Swift Hangzhou is safe and well. The authority is actively assessing operational and safety risks to implement plans that prioritize the crew’s safety and the protection of the marine environment. AMSA is working in conjunction with relevant Queensland authorities to ensure a coordinated response to the incident.

As the situation develops, AMSA remains vigilant in its efforts to manage the stranding effectively and mitigate any potential environmental impacts. The ongoing monitoring and response efforts highlight the commitment of maritime authorities to uphold safety standards in Australian waters.
