Cochin Shipyard gets order to build 40 ships from US, Germany, Norway, other
New Delhi, State-owned Cochin Shipyard has received orders to build over 40 ships from the US, Germany, Norway, and other countries, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, Sonowal highlighted that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is actively working to create a conducive ecosystem for shipbuilding.
Growing International Demand for Indian Shipbuilders
Most of the recent orders for shipbuilding have been directed towards Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) from foreign countries like Germany, America, and Norway. The ministry official also mentioned that Russian entities have expressed interest in collaborating with Indian shipyards, including Cochin Shipyard, to build ships in India.
Indian shipbuilders are gaining credibility globally, leading to an increase in international orders. Minister Sonowal emphasized that this trend showcases India’s ability to instill confidence in the quality and capacity of its production.
Strengthening International Collaborations in the Maritime Sector
During the 3rd ‘Sagarmanthan – The Ocean Dialogue,’ Minister Sonowal engaged with a Myanmar minister who shared the success of coastal shipping operations in Myanmar, particularly highlighting the efficient operations of Sittwe Port. Additionally, Belgium has shown interest in partnering with India to further enhance the shipbuilding sector.
The recent surge in orders for shipbuilding from foreign countries underscores the growing reputation of Indian shipbuilders in the global market. With a focus on quality production and capacity building, Indian shipyards like Cochin Shipyard are poised to maintain their strong presence in the international maritime industry.
