Collaborative Study on Biomethane Production and Use from Animal Manure in Hamanaka Town
Hamanaka Town Partners with Corporates for Biomethane Feasibility Study
A joint study has been initiated by Hamanaka Town, along with JA Hamanaka, Takanashi Milk Products Co., Ltd., Hokkaido Gas Co., Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., and MOL Sunflower Ltd. This study aims to explore the potential of producing and utilizing biomethane derived from animal manure sourced from local dairy farms in Hamanaka Town, Hokkaido, an area known for its robust dairy farming industry.
The focus of the study is to assess whether the biomethane produced could be a viable alternative to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is currently used as a low-carbon fuel in various industrial applications. By substituting conventional fuels such as coal and oil with biomethane, significant reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions could be achieved, aligning with the broader objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Given that biomethane can be seamlessly integrated into existing infrastructure for transportation and consumption, the study holds promise for advancing decarbonization efforts. The collaboration leverages the combined expertise of the six participating organizations to evaluate the feasibility and impact of this renewable energy source.
