Compagnie Maritime Nantaise Signs Shipbuilding Contract with GSI

Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (MN), a subsidiary of the European Sogestran Group, recently revealed plans for the construction of a groundbreaking new hybrid-powered Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessel. This innovative ship will feature a unique combination of traditional mechanical propulsion and wind-assisted propulsion, specifically designed for the maritime transportation of cargoes related to the space industry.

Partnership with Guangzhou Shipyard International

The shipbuilding contract for this cutting-edge vessel was officially signed on August 21, 2026, with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI). The agreement followed a rigorous process that involved consultations, technical assessments, site visits, and extensive contractual negotiations. This significant milestone marks the beginning of a new era in maritime transportation technology.

Enhancing Transport Capabilities for European Space Industry

MN’s new hybrid-powered RoRo vessel is expected to significantly enhance the company’s transport capabilities and support the growth of the European space industry. The vessel’s construction aligns with MN’s long-term partnership with Avio, a key player in the European space sector. Anticipated to enter into service by 2030, the vessel is specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of transporting launch vehicles, satellites, sensitive industrial cargoes, and related equipment.

This strategic collaboration between MN and Avio aims to bolster the delivery capacity of Avio’s Vega-C launch vehicles between Europe and the Guiana Space Centre. Additionally, the vessel will play a crucial role in the transportation of satellites, strategic equipment, and oversized components of the Ariane 6 programme when needed. With various cargo areas, including a main RoRo deck, a compartment for space-related cargoes with controlled environmental conditions, and a flexible open deck, the vessel is poised to revolutionize the transportation of sensitive industrial goods.

The vessel’s propulsion system will feature a unique blend of conventional mechanical propulsion and a wind-assistance system equipped with three automated OceanWings rigid sails. This cutting-edge technology was selected for its exceptional performance, ease of integration onboard, industrial maturity, and suitability for the vessel’s operational requirements. In addition to its innovative propulsion system, the vessel will incorporate various environmentally friendly measures to reduce its carbon footprint. These measures include wind-assisted propulsion, an efficient mechanical propulsion system, optimized hull design, advanced weather routing, system automation, and compatibility with biofuels.

Overall, MN’s new hybrid-powered RoRo vessel represents a groundbreaking advancement in maritime transportation technology, poised to transform the way sensitive industrial cargoes are transported for the European space industry.
