Construction Commences on Aitutaki's Arutanga Harbour Upgrade

Construction has officially begun on the new concrete hardstand at Arutanga Harbour, a crucial infrastructure project for Aitutaki. Following the completion of the channel widening and deepening earlier this year, this phase aims to enhance the safety and usability of the harbour. The project, driven by the Cook Islands Investment Corporation and local authorities, is set to significantly improve maritime services by the end of 2025.

Project Overview and Goals

The Arutanga Harbour Project is a vital initiative for Aitutaki, representing a substantial investment in the island’s infrastructure. The project is part of the Orongo Development Masterplan established in 2011 and aligns with the Te Tau Papa o Araura-Aitutaki Plan, which received approval from the Island Council in 2019. The primary objective is to bolster the harbour’s role as a lifeline for the island, facilitating the delivery of essential supplies such as food and fuel.

Construction is being executed by Landholdings Ltd., following the contract signing on June 20, 2025. The project is divided into three stages to minimize disruption to daily port operations, especially during peak boat days. The first stage will create a usable section of the hardstand, allowing port activities to continue safely while subsequent stages are completed. The entire hardstand contract is expected to be finalized by December 2025, enhancing the harbour’s functionality and resilience.

Anne Taoro, General Manager of Asset Development at the Cook Islands Investment Corporation, emphasized the project’s significance, stating it will greatly enhance the island’s infrastructure. Aitutaki Mayor Nick Henry expressed satisfaction with the progress, while John Batty from Landholdings Ltd. conveyed excitement about contributing to the island’s development.

Additional Developments at the Harbour

In addition to the hardstand construction, several other improvements are underway at Arutanga Harbour. These include the construction of a new jetty on the foreshore of the Fishing Club, designed for small crafts and cruise ship tenders. The basin is also being deepened to 4.5 meters, alongside drainage and beautification efforts to enhance the overall environment of the port area.

These developments are expected to not only improve the operational capacity of the harbour but also provide a better experience for residents and visitors alike. The ongoing enhancements reflect a commitment to ensuring that Aitutaki remains well-equipped to handle maritime needs, reinforcing its status as a vital hub in the Cook Islands.
