CORE POWER: SHIPS for America Act will inject capital into US shipbuilding,

CORE POWER Backs US Maritime Revitalization Bill

CORE POWER, a UK-based maritime nuclear innovation firm, is advocating for the reintroduction of the SHIPS for America Act in the US Senate. This legislation aims to transform the US shipping sector and bolster the nation’s shipbuilding and commercial maritime industries. The initiative aligns with President Donald Trump’s recent push to enhance American maritime capabilities to better compete with China.

Revitalizing the US Maritime Industry

The SHIPS for America Act, initially introduced in December 2024, seeks to rejuvenate the US shipbuilding sector, which has faced significant challenges over the years. Currently, China dominates global shipbuilding, constructing over 50% of the world’s vessels. The proposed legislation aims to close this gap by establishing national oversight and consistent funding for US maritime policies. This would enhance the competitiveness of US-flagged vessels in international markets by reducing bureaucratic hurdles, revitalizing the shipyard industrial base, and improving recruitment, training, and retention of mariners and shipyard workers.

CORE POWER launches civil nuclear program focused on floating power plants

Mikal Bøe, Chairman and CEO of CORE POWER, expressed strong support for the SHIPS for America Act, stating, “The technological edge it will advance through its support of US-flagged, large civil nuclear-powered ships will allow America to regain global maritime leadership.” He emphasized that passing this bill would unlock significant private investment in shipbuilding and civil nuclear technologies, essential for establishing a formidable maritime fleet.

Senator Mark Kelly, one of the bill’s reintroducers, highlighted the urgency of revitalizing the shipbuilding industry after years of neglect. He described the SHIPS for America Act as the most ambitious effort in a generation to counter China’s maritime dominance.

CORE POWER’s Innovative Initiatives

In addition to supporting the SHIPS for America Act, CORE POWER has launched a new initiative called Liberty, aimed at introducing floating nuclear power to the maritime market by the mid-2030s. This program is designed to establish the groundwork for utilizing nuclear energy within the civil maritime sector. CORE POWER plans to focus on modular construction of advanced fission technology and develop the necessary regulatory and supply chain frameworks for global implementation.

Furthermore, in January 2025, CORE POWER partnered with Glosten, a naval architecture firm, to design a floating nuclear power plant (FNPP) intended for US ports. This collaboration underscores CORE POWER’s commitment to advancing nuclear technology in maritime applications and enhancing the sustainability of the shipping industry.

As the US seeks to reclaim its position in the global maritime landscape, the SHIPS for America Act and CORE POWER’s initiatives represent significant steps toward a more competitive and innovative future for American shipping.
