Major LNG Shipping Partnership Announced

Introduction

In a significant move for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation (CSET) has announced a partnership with Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL). This collaboration will focus on the construction of six supersize gas carriers, known as QC-Max vessels, to support QatarEnergy, a leading LNG producer in the Middle East. The total investment for this project is estimated at around $2 billion. The vessels will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a prominent shipyard in China. This partnership marks a crucial step in expanding LNG transportation capabilities and highlights the growing demand for natural gas in global markets.

Strategic Partnership for LNG Transportation

COSCO Shipping Group, a state-owned enterprise in China, is making waves in the LNG sector with its latest partnership. By acquiring a 50% stake in the newbuilds through one of its subsidiaries, COSCO is positioning itself as a key player in the LNG shipping market. The QC-Max vessels, with a capacity of 271,000 cubic meters, are set to be the largest ever constructed for LNG transport. This new order, placed in September, follows a previous collaboration between COSCO and MOL, where they secured a contract for seven vessels with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters for QatarEnergy in 2022.

The QC-Max vessels are expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2031. This timeline reflects the growing urgency for efficient LNG transportation solutions as global energy demands continue to rise. QatarEnergy’s commitment to building 24 QC-Max vessels at the CSSC-affiliated yard underscores the scale of this initiative. With an estimated total investment of $8 billion, this project is poised to reshape the LNG shipping landscape.
