China's Qingdao Beihai to Build Eco-Friendly Bulk Carriers

Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, has secured a significant contract with COSCO Shipping. The agreement involves the construction of four 210,000-ton bulk carriers designed for methanol and ammonia compatibility. These vessels, intended for long-term charter to COSCO Shipping Bulk, are set to meet the stringent EEDI Stage III efficiency standards, marking a notable advancement in eco-friendly shipping technology.

Innovative Design and Future-Ready Features

The newly ordered bulk carriers will incorporate next-generation linear designs that aim to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 6%. This innovative approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions the vessels for future alternative fuel usage, aligning with global efforts to transition towards more sustainable shipping practices. The contract follows previous agreements for similar dual-fuel-ready ships, showcasing COSCO Bulk’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with advanced energy-saving technologies.
