Costa Cruise Ship Assists Stranded Sailing Vessel in Mid-Atlantic
Costa Fascinosa Aids Stranded Yacht in Atlantic
On December 14, 2024, the cruise ship Costa Fascinosa played a crucial role in a dramatic rescue operation in the Atlantic Ocean. The ship responded to a distress call from the Canadian-registered sailing yacht Elefance, which had encountered a major mechanical failure during its transatlantic journey. This incident highlights the importance of maritime safety and the responsibilities of vessels at sea.
A Timely Response to Distress
The distress call from Elefance came in around 5 p.m. on that Saturday. The yacht was on its way from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands to St. Martin when it experienced a significant mechanical failure. This failure left the yacht adrift and unable to sail, with insufficient fuel to power its engines for the remainder of the journey. The situation was dire, as the yacht faced potential hazards in the open ocean.
Upon receiving the distress signal, Costa Fascinosa immediately altered its course to the south-southeast. The cruise ship, which weighs 114,500 gross tons, was reasonably close and could reach the stranded yacht in a timely manner. After three hours of navigation, the Costa Fascinosa arrived at the Elefance’s location. A lifeboat was quickly dispatched to facilitate the fuel transfer. The crew of Costa Fascinosa successfully refueled the stranded yacht, allowing it to resume its journey without any injuries or transfers of individuals to the cruise ship. The swift action taken by the Costa Fascinosa crew ensured that the Elefance could continue its voyage safely.
Gratitude and Future Voyages
Following the successful fuel transfer, the crew of Elefance expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Costa Fascinosa team via social media. They thanked the crew for their heroic efforts, stating, “A huge thank you to the crew of the Costa Fascinosa for the heroic fuel transfer mid-Atlantic! We are very grateful for the assistance and wish everyone a fabulous journey.” This acknowledgment underscores the camaraderie and support that exists among seafarers, regardless of the type of vessel they operate.

After assisting the Elefance, Costa Fascinosa continued on its own transatlantic cruise. The ship had departed from Savona, Italy, on December 5, 2024, and is scheduled to arrive in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe, on December 19. During this 14-night journey, the cruise ship will make stops in various locations, including France, Spain, the Canary Islands, and Barbados. With a capacity to welcome 3,780 passengers, Costa Fascinosa is set to offer diverse Caribbean sailings from Guadeloupe, visiting popular destinations such as Antigua and the Dominican Republic. In mid-March 2025, the ship will return to Europe for the summer season in the Mediterranean.
Unique Cruise Ship Rescues
Cruise ships often find themselves in unique rescue situations while at sea. While many distress calls involve migrant rescues, all vessels are obligated under international maritime law to assist any craft in distress. The Costa Fascinosa’s recent rescue of the Elefance is just one example of how cruise ships can provide critical support in emergencies.
For instance, the Disney Treasure recently performed its first rescue before officially entering service. On November 10, 2024, the ship rescued four individuals from the catamaran Serenity, which was taking on water 230 miles off the coast of Bermuda. Similarly, in January 2024, Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas rescued six fishermen and their dog after their boat experienced engine failure. Another notable rescue occurred in October 2023 when P&O Cruises’ Pacific Explorer saved a young man attempting to row across the Pacific Ocean, who found himself in distress with an overturned boat near Vanuatu.
Regardless of the circumstances, cruise ships remain committed to ensuring the safety of all lives at sea. They will respond to those in need as long as they can do so without jeopardizing their own safety. The Costa Fascinosa’s recent actions exemplify this commitment, showcasing the vital role that cruise ships play in maritime safety.
