Costa Rica Leads in Conservation With Marine Payment Programs
Costa Rica's Path to Environmental Excellence: Protecting Nature and Supporting Communities
Costa Rica is a small country with a big heart for nature. Known worldwide for its rich biodiversity, Costa Rica has taken many steps to protect its environment while helping its people thrive. Two programs, the Payment for Marine Environmental Services and PES Bio Plus, show how Costa Rica combines conservation and community support.
Protecting the Gulf of Nicoya’s Mangroves
One of Costa Rica’s most innovative ideas is the Payment for Marine Environmental Services Program. This program works to protect mangrove forests in the Gulf of Nicoya, which are home to many species of fish, mollusks, and birds. Mangroves are important for wildlife and help local people earn a living.
Under this program, 157 people, including both men and women, who harvest mollusks sustainably, receive financial rewards. These rewards total 212 million colones annually, which helps them support their families while protecting the environment. The program involves six carefully chosen associations based on strict management plans designed for sustainable practices.

Participants follow clear rules to ensure they do not harm the mangroves. For example, they are not allowed to cut down trees or damage the forest unless specific permissions are given. These guidelines help preserve the balance of nature while providing income to local communities.
Expanding Forest Conservation with PES Bio Plus
Costa Rica’s conservation efforts don’t stop at mangroves. The country has also launched a new program called PES Bio Plus. This initiative focuses on protecting forests, especially in rural areas. Forests play a huge role in keeping water clean, protecting wildlife, and offering other benefits like clean air.
The National Forest Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), which manages this program, aims to double the area of protected forests each year. This is a big step for Costa Rica and shows the country’s commitment to preserving its natural resources. The program helps forest owners, especially those who couldn’t afford to join before, by offering financial incentives to practice sustainable forestry.
A Model for the World
Costa Rica proves that protecting nature and helping people can go hand in hand. By rewarding individuals and communities for their efforts, the country creates a win-win situation. Programs like Payment for Marine Environmental Services and PES Bio Plus not only protect ecosystems but also improve the lives of those who depend on them.
As the world faces challenges like deforestation and climate change, Costa Rica’s innovative ideas show how countries can work together with their people to find solutions. These efforts are an inspiration for other nations aiming to balance environmental care with economic growth.
