Croatia’s Iskra Shipyard and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Sign Defense

Croatia’s Iskra Shipyard and South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have recently entered into a collaboration agreement to work together in the realms of defense and commercial shipbuilding. This partnership aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technology, support the development of local Croatian suppliers, and boost the competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry not only in Croatia but also across Europe.

Scope of Cooperation and Future Projects

The agreement between Iskra Shipyard and HHI encompasses various aspects of cooperation, including upcoming construction projects for the Croatian Navy. This involves Croatia’s ambitious new multi-purpose frigate program, along with the construction of military, commercial, and specialized vessels.

Both parties plan to leverage Iskra Shipyard’s production and engineering capabilities alongside HHI’s extensive experience in building naval vessels, commercial ships, and offshore facilities. Additionally, they aim to establish an industrial network that connects research and educational institutions, technology firms, domestic equipment manufacturers, and shipyards.

Procurement Process for New Frigates

In January 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia announced the commencement of a procurement process for frigates. Officials emphasized that these new frigates would not only enhance the operational capacities of the Croatian Navy but also play a crucial role in safeguarding Croatia’s interests in the Adriatic Sea.

The collaboration between Iskra Shipyard and Hyundai Heavy Industries signifies a significant step forward in the shipbuilding industry, fostering innovation, knowledge exchange, and technological advancement. This partnership is poised to bring about positive developments in the field of naval and commercial ship construction, benefiting both Croatia and Europe as a whole.
