Cruise Ship Sanitation Scores Raise Concerns

Cruise ships are popular vacation choices for many travelers. However, recent reports highlight serious sanitation issues that could jeopardize passenger health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducts regular inspections of these vessels to ensure they meet health standards. Unfortunately, some ships have failed to meet the required sanitation scores, raising alarms among health-conscious customers.

CDC Inspections: A Closer Look

The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program plays a crucial role in maintaining health standards on cruise ships. The agency conducts random surprise inspections, scoring each ship on a scale from zero to 100. A score of 85 or below is considered a failure. This rigorous evaluation examines various areas, including pools, activity centers, buffet handwashing stations, and food storage and cooking equipment.

In 2024, the CDC reported 13 outbreaks of bacterial and viral infections on cruise ships, with norovirus being the most common culprit. Norovirus, often referred to as the “winter vomiting bug,” is highly contagious and can lead to severe gastrointestinal issues. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and even low-grade fever.

Throughout the year, the CDC conducted 151 inspections, including follow-up inspections on 23 ships. The average score across all inspected vessels was approximately 95.9, with 27 ships achieving a perfect score of 100. However, nine ships fell short of the 90 mark, indicating potential health risks for passengers.

Ships with Low Sanitation Scores

Among the ships that did not meet the sanitation standards, several names stand out. The Hanseatic Inspiration from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises scored a disappointing 89 after an earlier inspection yielded a score of 62. Similarly, the Carnival Elation and Adventure of the Seas, both scored 89 during their inspections. Other ships, including the National Geographic Sea Bird and Carnival Miracle, also received scores below 90.

The MSC Magnifica, Evrima, Carnival Breeze, and Caribbean Princess all scored 86, indicating significant sanitation concerns. A spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd acknowledged the initial low score for the Hanseatic Inspiration as an unfortunate incident. They emphasized that the company adheres to strict hygiene requirements and has since addressed operational aspects to improve sanitation.

In contrast, some ships improved their scores after follow-up inspections. The Crystal Serenity initially scored 89 but later achieved a score of 90. Similarly, the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise improved from a failing score of 83 to a passing score of 92 after a subsequent inspection.
