Cruise Ships Shining Jewel In Cambodia’s Tourism Map

Sihanoukville A Rising Star in Cruise Tourism

Transformation of Sihanoukville Port

Once a quaint fishing village, Sihanoukville has undergone a remarkable transformation. The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port now stands as Cambodia’s main deep-sea port. This vibrant port is attracting international cruise ships, marking a significant shift in the country’s tourism landscape. In 2023, the port anticipates welcoming 20 cruise ships, a notable increase from the 14 that docked last year. This surge is a promising sign for Cambodia’s tourism sector, which is gradually recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the first nine months of this year alone, over 11,000 cruise passengers have arrived at the port. This influx is largely attributed to the country’s ongoing peace and stability, which have fostered economic growth and boosted tourism. Long Dimanche, the Vice-Governor of Sihanoukville province, emphasized the importance of well-developed infrastructure. The availability of a deep-sea port is crucial for accommodating both large and small vessels, allowing thousands of tourists to explore Cambodia’s stunning coastline.

Moreover, the province is actively promoting maritime routes that connect its islands to nearby destinations in Thailand and Vietnam. This initiative is part of the Cambodia-Vietnam-Thailand Economic Corridor, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and tourism. While Sihanoukville’s cruise arrivals are still modest compared to its ASEAN neighbors—such as Penang, which expects 65 cruise ships, and Thailand’s Phuket, which welcomes nearly 200 annually—the growth trend is encouraging for industry experts.

The Potential of Cruise Tourism in Cambodia

The cruise tourism sector in Cambodia holds immense potential for growth. Jason Worth, Vice President of International Sales at Oceania Cruises, highlighted the increasing demand from Asian travelers seeking premium cruise experiences. Sihanoukville is featured as a key port of call on many Southeast Asian itineraries, showcasing the natural beauty and rich culture of the Cambodian coast.

Visitors to Sihanoukville can enjoy idyllic beaches and excellent snorkeling opportunities. The port’s location on the picturesque Bay of Thailand makes it an attractive destination. Worth noted that the area is home to numerous Buddhist temples, including Wat Otres, located behind Otres Beach. These cultural landmarks add to the allure of Sihanoukville as a cruise destination.

The Cambodian tourism sector is witnessing a resurgence, with nearly 4.3 million tourists arriving in the first eight months of this year. In 2022, the country welcomed approximately 5.5 million foreign visitors, generating significant revenue. The cruise industry, despite representing only a small fraction of international travel, is a major contributor to global economies. The “2024 State of the Cruise Industry Report” indicates that the sector generated around RM610 billion (US$138 billion) in 2022 and supported 1.2 million jobs worldwide.

As Sihanoukville aims to position itself as a leading cruise destination, the local government is committed to enhancing the port’s facilities. Long Dimanche expressed optimism about the future of cruise tourism in the province, envisioning Sihanoukville as a fully equipped hub for standard tourist cruises. This ambition aligns with the province’s goal of becoming a Model Multi-purpose Special Economic Zone in Cambodia.

Sihanoukville is not just a port; it is a destination rich in attractions. As Cambodia continues to recover from the pandemic, the growth of cruise tourism in Sihanoukville presents a significant opportunity for the local economy. The combination of stunning natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and improved infrastructure positions Sihanoukville as a promising destination for cruise travelers.
