Cummins Secures DNV Approval for Methanol-Ready Engines

Cummins Inc. has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining Approval in Principle (AIP) from DNV for its methanol-ready QSK60 engines, which comply with IMO II and IMO III regulations. This approval, granted in June 2024, confirms the viability of Cummins’ retrofittable methanol dual-fuel solution for the marine sector, ensuring adherence to stringent safety and performance standards. The engines, with power ratings ranging from 2000 to 2700 hp, are set to revolutionize the maritime industry.

Innovative Retrofit Solutions for Marine Operators

Following extensive field testing, Cummins plans to introduce retrofit kits for its QSK60 engines after 2028, aligning with market demand and the readiness of necessary infrastructure. These kits are designed for diesel-electric systems and can be integrated with battery technology, enhancing both efficiency and sustainability in marine operations. This innovative approach allows vessel operators to upgrade their engines without undergoing a complete overhaul, significantly reducing downtime and costs.

Dawn Wehr, Executive Director of Strategy, Product Planning & Digital at Cummins, emphasized the importance of this retrofittable solution. She stated that it not only minimizes the need for extensive vessel modifications but also contributes to immediate reductions in carbon emissions. Cummins is also exploring solutions for other alcohol fuels, such as ethanol, to accommodate various operational needs and fuel availability, ensuring a smooth transition for marine operators.

The recent AIP builds on Cummins’ earlier announcement from August 2023, which allowed the use of renewable diesel, including hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), across its high-horsepower engine range. This dual-fuel capability enables ship operators to make substantial strides toward lowering carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Sustainable Marine Solutions

Gbile Adewunmi, Vice President of Industrial Markets for Cummins’ Power Systems Business, reiterated the company’s dedication to delivering innovative power solutions tailored for the marine industry. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with customers to develop solutions that meet specific application requirements and sustainability targets. This announcement exemplifies Cummins’ ongoing investment in technology advancements as part of its Destination Zero strategy, which aims for a future of zero emissions in the marine sector.

As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, Cummins’ methanol-ready engines and retrofit solutions position the company as a leader in sustainable marine technology. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, Cummins is paving the way for a greener future in maritime operations.
