Pakistan Navy Receives New Offshore Patrol Vessel

Damen Shipyards Group has successfully delivered the second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) 2600 to the Pakistan Navy. This vessel, named PNS Yamama, follows the earlier delivery of PNS Hunain in the summer of 2024. The handover ceremony took place on December 17 at Constanta, Romania. This delivery signifies a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between Damen and the Pakistan Navy, which began with the construction of two Yarmook Class vessels in 2020. The collaboration continues to strengthen as both parties work together on various maritime projects.

Specifications and Capabilities of the OPV 2600

The OPV 2600 series, including the newly delivered PNS Yamama, features impressive specifications. Each vessel has a displacement of 2,600 tons and measures 98 meters in length. These vessels are designed for a wide range of maritime operations, including maritime security and military missions beyond traditional warfare. Their capabilities allow them to conduct sustained operations in contested environments, showcasing resilience, flexibility, and adaptability.

These advanced patrol vessels are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and systems that enhance their operational effectiveness. They can perform various tasks, from surveillance and reconnaissance to search and rescue missions. The OPV 2600 is not just a military asset; it also plays a crucial role in ensuring maritime safety and security in the region. The Pakistan Navy aims to utilize these vessels to strengthen its maritime presence and respond effectively to emerging challenges in the maritime domain.

During the handover ceremony, Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi expressed his satisfaction with the project. He stated, “The Offshore Patrol Vessels project is an ultimate success not only for Pakistan but for Damen, the Galati Shipyard, and all co-makers involved.” His remarks highlight the collaborative effort that has gone into the design, construction, and commissioning of these vessels, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in achieving shared goals.

Strengthening Ties Through the PMSTP Initiative

The delivery of the PNS Yamama comes at a time of increasing collaboration between the Pakistan Navy and Damen Shipyards. Both parties recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) held in Karachi in November. This MoU signifies Damen’s commitment to supporting the Pakistan Maritime Science and Technology Park (PMSTP), an initiative aimed at fostering innovation and advancement in maritime technology.

The PMSTP will serve as a central hub for collaboration among authorities, industry, and researchers. Located near the University of Bahria in Karachi, it aims to promote research and development in maritime sciences. As a partner in this initiative, Damen will help establish a local service center to provide maintenance and support for Damen vessels operating in the region, including the Pakistan Navy’s OPVs.

Damen Regional Sales Director Stephan Stout emphasized the importance of local collaboration. He stated, “Wherever we operate in the world, we look to cooperate with local governments, industry, and education and research institutes.” This approach not only boosts the domestic industry and local employment but also facilitates the development of a robust local supply chain. Damen’s involvement in the PMSTP reflects its commitment to advancing a sustainable maritime industry in Pakistan for the long term.
