Strengthening Colombia’s Naval Industry

The PES frigate is based on Damen Naval’s proven SIGMA 10514 series. This design is known for its versatility and combat capabilities. The collaboration with Nevesbu allows for the integration of advanced naval architecture and platform systems. This partnership is particularly significant as it enables COTECMAR, Colombia’s leading shipyard located in Cartagena, to construct a frigate locally for the first time. Damen Naval Project Director Jasper Oreel emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This project highlights the power of collaboration within the Damen Shipyards Group.”

By combining their expertise, Damen Naval and Nevesbu aim to foster a self-sufficient defense industry in Colombia. This initiative will not only enhance the capabilities of the Colombian Navy but also create jobs and promote knowledge sharing within the local workforce. The PES frigate project represents a major milestone for Colombian shipbuilding, paving the way for future advancements in naval technology and capabilities.

Local Impact and Future Prospects

The first PES frigate is scheduled for delivery in 2030. This timeline marks a significant achievement for the Colombian shipbuilding sector. The project will leverage global expertise while focusing on local job creation. Bart van Rijssen, Managing Director of Nevesbu, expressed pride in contributing to this advanced frigate for the Colombian Navy. The collaboration aims to ensure that the local workforce gains valuable skills and experience throughout the construction process.

As the project progresses, it will serve as a model for future collaborations in the defense sector. The integration of local resources with international expertise can lead to a more robust and self-reliant naval industry in Colombia. This partnership not only strengthens military capabilities but also enhances the country’s economic landscape. By investing in local shipbuilding, Colombia is taking significant steps toward a more secure and prosperous future.
