Danaos Expands Fleet with New 9,200 TEU Vessels

Greek shipping company Danaos has recently announced the addition of two more vessels to its newbuilding orderbook, further expanding its fleet. With a focus on enhancing its container ship fleet, Danaos has contracted a Chinese shipyard for the construction of these new vessels. This move comes as part of the company’s strategic growth plans and commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the shipping industry.
Expanding the Fleet with New 9,200 TEU Vessels
Danaos, under the leadership of John Coustas, has secured a deal with CSSC-affiliated Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding in Guangzhou for the construction of two 9,200 TEU container ships. These vessels are expected to be delivered in 2027, with each ship costing approximately $105 million. This latest order follows Danaos’ previous acquisition of a fifth methanol-ready scrubber-fitted 9,200 TEU ship from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC) in August.
The company’s newbuilding program includes the delivery of six newbuild boxships in 2024, one in January of this year, and now the two additional vessels scheduled for 2027. With a total of 15 ships contracted at Chinese yards, Danaos is set to receive one boxship in 2025, three in 2026, nine in 2027, and two in 2028. Notably, 13 of these vessels have already been fixed on multi-year charters, demonstrating the company’s commitment to long-term partnerships.
To support its newbuilding program and overall fleet expansion, Danaos has secured a new syndicated loan of up to $850 million. This financial backing will enable the company to continue investing in its fleet and maintaining its position as a leading player in the container shipping industry. Currently, Danaos’ fleet consists of 74 containerships and 10 capsize bulk carriers, excluding those under construction.
Danaos’ recent order of two 9,200 TEU container ships reflects the company’s strategic vision for growth and commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the shipping industry. With a focus on expanding its fleet and securing long-term charters, Danaos is poised for continued success in the competitive maritime sector.
