Uni-Tankers Launches Innovative Wind-Assisted Shipping Technology

Uni-Tankers has made significant strides in maritime innovation with the installation of four VentoFoils on its M/T Jutlandia Swan. This development is a pivotal moment for the Danish Cleanship project, which is backed by the Danish EPA’s MUDP program. The initiative aims to gather precise data on the effectiveness of wingsails in reducing fuel consumption and emissions in the shipping industry.

Advancing Maritime Sustainability

The Cleanship project is focused on enhancing the sustainability of maritime operations. With the VentoFoils now installed, the M/T Jutlandia Swan is poised to embark on its maiden voyage to collect vital performance data. Julie Tølbøl Rasmussen, Senior Project Manager at the Danish Technological Institute, emphasized the importance of this phase. “By measuring this technology under real-sailing conditions, we can deliver valuable insights into the actual effects of energy-efficient solutions on vessels,” she stated.

In addition to the wingsails, the Cleanship project is also investigating the impact of biofuels and analyzing operational strategies. This comprehensive approach aims to provide shipping companies with actionable recommendations for reducing emissions. The project recognizes that testing new solutions is only part of the challenge; understanding their performance in everyday operations is equally crucial.

Wind-assisted propulsion, as demonstrated by the VentoFoils, offers a promising avenue for improving energy efficiency, particularly during open-sea voyages. Kristian Larsen, Technical Director at Uni-Tankers, noted that the real value of this technology lies in its integration into daily operations. “We now have the opportunity to test how these sails perform at sea, what they mean for fuel efficiency, and how the crew can work with them in practice,” he explained.

Empowering Crews for New Technologies

The successful deployment of the VentoFoils requires careful consideration of crew training and operational procedures. Uni-Tankers is committed to ensuring that its crew is well-prepared to operate this new technology safely and effectively. The company is developing comprehensive training programs that cover maintenance and operational protocols.

Larsen emphasized the importance of crew engagement, stating, “New technology only delivers results when it is understood and supported by the crew onboard.” By involving the crew in the process, Uni-Tankers aims to foster a culture of knowledge and routine that enhances the effectiveness of the VentoFoils.

As the Cleanship project transitions from installation to data collection, the performance of the wingsails will be continuously monitored. The ship’s systems will track key metrics such as fuel consumption, speed, engine load, and weather conditions. This data-driven approach aims to bridge the gap between technological advancements and practical solutions for the maritime sector.

Julie Tølbøl Rasmussen concluded, “Through data and real operational experience, the Cleanship project aims to provide the maritime sector with the tools necessary to create meaningful change.”
