MAN PrimeServ Signs Service Agreement with COSCO SHIPPING

MAN PrimeServ Hamburg, a part of the German engine company MAN Energy Solutions, has signed an important deal with COSCO SHIPPING Group’s subsidiary, Hanyuan Technical Service Center GmbH. The two companies will work together for the next two years to help COSCO SHIPPING vessels that travel to Europe, North Africa, and the Near Middle East. The agreement, called a Service Cooperation Agreement, was signed at the 2024 SMM maritime trade fair held in Hamburg, Germany.

This agreement means that MAN PrimeServ Hamburg will provide a full range of support for COSCO SHIPPING vessels. This includes offering spare parts, ship materials, inspections, and repairs whenever the ships arrive in Europe or nearby regions. This new cooperation is expected to make services smoother and more efficient for COSCO SHIPPING, which is one of the largest shipping companies in the world.

    What the Agreement Means

Jun Xiong, the General Manager of Hanyuan Technical Service Center GmbH, is excited about this partnership. He explained that this agreement is a big step forward for both companies. It will make their cooperation much stronger and cover more areas of their business. This deal is a “win-win” for both Chinese shipowners and MAN PrimeServ, according to Xiong.

Olaf Gunia, the Vice President and Head of MAN PrimeServ Hamburg, also spoke about the new partnership. He said that COSCO SHIPPING Group is already one of their biggest and most important customers. The two companies have been working closely for a long time, especially when it comes to providing spare parts. With this new agreement, MAN PrimeServ hopes to improve their business together by providing even better technical services for COSCO SHIPPING’s vessels traveling to Europe.

    Looking to the Future

This agreement will last for two years, but there is a chance that it could be extended. Olaf Gunia mentioned that MAN PrimeServ is interested in offering similar services to other Chinese shipping companies in the future. He believes this agreement could open doors for more partnerships between MAN PrimeServ and other shipping groups.

This new service cooperation agreement shows how important teamwork and strong partnerships are in the shipping industry. With companies like MAN PrimeServ and COSCO SHIPPING working together, shipowners can be sure their vessels are getting top-notch support.

  • Wärtsilä Cuts CO2 by the Same as 17,000 Cars with Fit4Power Solution

Wärtsilä Cuts CO2 by the Same as 17,000 Cars with Fit4Power Solution

Since October 2022, Wärtsilä, a technology group, has been helping ships reduce fuel use and lower CO2 emissions with their Fit4Power solution. This new technology has already saved more than 14,000 metric tonnes of fuel and cut over 45,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions across ten ships. This is the same as the yearly emissions from 17,000 cars.

Wärtsilä’s Fit4Power comes at a time when reducing carbon is a big goal for the shipping industry. Ships are looking for ways to meet stricter environmental rules while still being cost-efficient. Many ship owners now want flexible solutions to make sure their ships stay profitable and eco-friendly for years to come.

“Finding the right balance between economic and environmental needs is tough,” said Andreas Wiesmann, a manager at Wärtsilä Marine. “The entire shipping industry is changing as more businesses are trying to make their supply chains greener.”

At the same time, ships have to follow stricter rules like the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). Ship operators are also dealing with rising fuel costs, political problems around the world, and unpredictable weather, all of which can increase fuel use and emissions.

    A World-First Solution for Two-Stroke Engines

Wärtsilä launched Fit4Power to help solve these challenges and keep ships compliant with emissions rules. The Fit4Power solution helps older two-stroke ship engines run more efficiently by making them leaner and healthier. This is done by reducing the size of the engine’s bore by 25%. This change helps the engine run at its best, using less fuel and burning it more efficiently. As a result, the ship produces fewer greenhouse gases.

For ship owners, this means their existing fleets can meet the latest environmental standards and be ready for future rules. Without upgrades like Fit4Power, 80% of the world’s merchant fleet could fall into the lowest CII rating by 2030. This would force them to take corrective actions or risk losing business to more efficient ships.

Wärtsilä enables acceleration of marine’s transition to sustainable fuels with introduction of four methanol engines

Wärtsilä’s Fit4Power also helps prepare ships to use alternative fuels in the future, another step toward lowering emissions.

    The Benefits for Each Ship

For each ship that uses Fit4Power, the potential fuel savings could be up to 2,000 tonnes per year, depending on how the ship operates. This would also reduce CO2 emissions by up to 6,400 tonnes per year. In terms of money, a ship owner could save as much as 2.18 million euros each year in operating costs.

Wiesmann added, “Fit4Power is an important part of Wärtsilä’s plan to help make shipping greener. It’s the first solution of its kind and shows our ability to give marine engines a longer life. By improving engine efficiency, we are helping ships reduce emissions in a cost-effective way.”

Currently, over 30 ships are scheduled to be retrofitted with Fit4Power. Of these, ten ships have already been upgraded and have been using the technology for up to 20 months.

Ascenz Marorka équipera l’ensemble de la flotte de méthaniers de Gazocean avec sa solution

Ascenz Marorka, a part of GTT Group, has been chosen by Gazocean, a French company specializing in managing LNG (liquefied natural gas) ships, to equip their entire fleet with smart shipping technology. This fleet includes six LNG carriers, all of which will now use Ascenz Marorka’s “Smart Shipping” solution.

This system helps manage how ships perform and keeps track of the LNG cargo they carry. It also automatically collects data from sensors on board each ship. This information is then used to create performance and environmental reports for Gazocean, their shipowners, and charterers. The goal is to improve the ships’ energy efficiency.

One big benefit of using this technology is that it will significantly reduce the administrative workload for the ship’s crew. By automating many of the reports, the crew can focus on more important operational tasks. The shore staff will also benefit from better data quality and less time spent checking and formatting reports manually.

The contract also includes weather routing services and real-time fleet monitoring. This helps ensure the ships’ routes are safe and efficient.

This collaboration is very meaningful to us as it aims to improve working conditions for the crew by reducing their administrative burden and allowing them to focus on key operational tasks.”

Régis Adnet, President of Gazocean, also shared his thoughts, saying, “We are pleased to strengthen our cooperation with GTT Group and launch this important project with Ascenz Marorka. Digitalization and innovation are key tools for supporting our operational excellence and achieving our economic and environmental goals. Through this initiative, we also aim to make daily tasks easier for our crew and enhance the attractiveness of our company in a competitive industry.”
