Dearsan Begins Construction of Qatari Navy’s Fast Attack Craft

Qatar's Naval Expansion: New Fast Attack Craft Launched

The Qatari Emiri Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the recent keel-laying ceremony for two new Fast Attack Craft (FAC 50) at Dearsan shipyard in Istanbul. This significant event marks the official commencement of construction for these advanced vessels, which are part of Qatar’s broader initiative to modernize its naval fleet. The decision to expand the navy comes as part of Qatar’s strategic efforts to bolster its defense and security operations in the Gulf region.

A Step Forward in Naval Defense

The keel-laying ceremony for the FAC 50 took place following the successful completion of a critical design assessment by Dearsan’s Project Control Office in November. This assessment was crucial in ensuring that the design and specifications of the vessels meet the operational requirements of the Qatari Navy. The Turkish shipbuilder received the production order last March, indicating a strong commitment to support Qatar’s defense initiatives.

The FAC 50 vessels are designed to fulfill multiple roles, including intelligence gathering, border control, and port security. They will also be equipped for anti-piracy operations, search and rescue missions, and other humanitarian tasks. These capabilities are essential for maintaining security in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, as well as within Qatar’s territorial waters. The delivery of the first vessel is anticipated in 2027, with the second expected two months later. This timeline reflects a well-planned approach to enhancing Qatar’s naval capabilities.

Features of the Halul Class Attack Craft

The Qatari FAC 50 will be a state-of-the-art vessel, constructed with a combination of steel and aluminum to ensure durability and performance. With a draught of 2 meters (7 feet) and a beam of 9 meters (30 feet), the craft will be compact yet powerful. It will accommodate up to 30 personnel, making it suitable for various operational scenarios.

Powering the FAC 50 will be three diesel engines coupled with water jets, enabling the vessel to reach speeds exceeding 36 knots (67 kilometers or 41 miles per hour). This speed is crucial for rapid response in emergency situations. The craft will also be armed with advanced weaponry, including Çakir multi-domain cruise missiles, Sungur short-range air defense missiles, and a Stamp lightweight remote control weapon station. Additionally, it will feature 40-millimeter cannons and 12.7-millimeter man-portable machine guns for enhanced combat capabilities.

Moreover, the FAC 50 will incorporate cutting-edge technology such as electronic warfare systems, surveillance radar, low-signature navigation technology, and electro-optical sensors. These features will significantly enhance the operational effectiveness of the Qatari Navy, allowing it to conduct a wide range of missions with increased efficiency and safety. As Qatar continues to invest in its naval forces, the FAC 50 represents a pivotal advancement in its maritime defense strategy.
