Death Toll Rises to 54 in Tragic Ferry Disaster
The tragic sinking of the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 has claimed 54 lives, with the recovery of another body from the wreckage on February 14. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has resumed its underwater search operations after a brief pause for the divers’ health. Authorities are now focused on locating the remaining 25 missing individuals, as investigations into the cause of the disaster continue.
Search Operations and Recovery Efforts
The Philippine Coast Guard’s technical divers have intensified their search efforts following a short break for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which was necessary to ensure the divers’ safety after extensive underwater work. On February 14, divers discovered the body of a man in the general accommodation area of the sunken vessel. This body was subsequently transported to the port of Zamboanga for identification and burial by a police forensic team.
The PCG has committed to locating the remaining 25 missing victims, based on validated reports from police, the city disaster risk reduction and management office, and relatives of those on board. The search operation had previously been suspended due to strong underwater currents, which posed significant challenges for the divers. Despite these difficulties, the PCG remains dedicated to adhering to established safety standards throughout the ongoing recovery efforts.
Investigation into the Cause of the Sinking
The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 sank near Baluk-Baluk Island in Hadji Muhtammad town while en route to Jolo in Sulu on January 26. Preliminary investigations by the Department of Transportation suggest that overloading may have contributed to the maritime accident. The vessel’s operator, Aleson Shipping Lines, faces the possibility of losing its franchise if safety violations are confirmed during the investigation.
PCG spokesperson Capt. Noemie Cayabyab emphasized that the search operation is being conducted with strict adherence to safety protocols. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working diligently to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies at sea. The focus remains on providing closure to the families affected by this devastating incident.
