DEME’s new offshore construction vessel to be built in China, delivery in 2028
DEME Group Orders Advanced Offshore Construction Vessel

DEME Group has announced the order of a state-of-the-art offshore construction vessel (OCV) designed for trenching, burial, and cable-laying operations. This new vessel, featuring a methanol-ready propulsion system for enhanced fuel flexibility, is set to be built by PaxOcean at the Zhoushan shipyard in China and is expected to be delivered by 2028. The addition of this vessel will bolster DEME’s existing fleet, which includes the cable installation vessels Living Stone and Viking Neptun.
Innovative Features and Capabilities
The new OCV, based on the Norwegian SALT 310 design, will measure 123 meters in length and will be equipped with advanced technology to enhance its operational capabilities. It will feature a DP2 dynamic positioning system, a 150-ton active heave-compensated offshore crane, and a hangar designed for two work-class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Additionally, the vessel will incorporate a hybrid 1,000-kWh battery system, which will contribute to its efficiency and sustainability.
With a capacity to accommodate up to 123 personnel, the OCV will also be outfitted with two 2,500-ton cable carousels, making it well-suited for extensive cable installation projects. DEME has indicated that this investment represents a significant financial commitment, with an estimated value ranging between €50 million and €150 million. Hugo Bouvy, Managing Director Offshore Energy at DEME, emphasized the company’s extensive experience, having installed over 5,000 kilometers of subsea cables across wind farms in Europe and the United States. He stated that this new vessel will enhance DEME’s cable installation capabilities and expand its versatile fleet of vessels and solutions.
Bluestone Wins Major Contract for Two New Cable-Laying Vessels
Strategic Partnerships and Future Prospects
PaxOcean, the shipbuilder responsible for the new OCV, recently announced that it has secured contracts for two OCVs with a prominent European shipowner, along with options for two additional vessels. This partnership highlights the growing demand for advanced offshore construction capabilities in the renewable energy sector, particularly as the industry shifts towards more sustainable practices.
As the offshore energy market continues to evolve, DEME Group’s investment in this new vessel reflects its commitment to innovation and efficiency in supporting offshore projects. The company aims to remain at the forefront of the industry by enhancing its fleet and capabilities, ensuring that it can meet the increasing demands of clients in the offshore energy sector.
